Bangalore: Tennis star Sania Mirza hasn?t had the best of starts to 2010?on and off court. A broken service game is one thing, but a broken engagement or a broken heart is quite another.
Earlier this week, the 23-year-old?s father Imran called off her engagement to Mohammed Sohrab Mirza. Sania was engaged to Mohammed, who is studying business in the UK, at a luxury hotel in Hyderabad last July.
DIFFERENT STROKES: Sania and Sohrab had known each other for over five years before they got engaged last July
Sania confirmed that her engagement was off, but refused to provide reasons for it. ?We were friends for half a decade, but found ourselves incompatible during our engagement period. I wish Sohrab the best in life,?? was all she would say.
Even before the two got engaged, questions were doing the rounds about whether Mohammed could cope with the demands of being life-partner to a widely-travelled, hugely-popular athlete. Sania, who has been struggling with the differences for the last couple of months, does not seem to have taken the break-up well as her results on court show. However, she?s doing what she always does at the time of a crisis, surrounding herself with family and friends.
As it stands, Sania will have to turn her focus to the courts, and may find comfort there. She flies out to Kuala Lumpur on Friday, where she leads India?s challenge in the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania Group II competition, starting February 2. Sania said, ?It isn?t easy. It?s a physically demanding competition where you play more than one match a day and play everyday. But I?m looking forward to it.?
